What to Do About Postpartum Hair Loss

Many new mothers notice that their once-lustrous hair becomes dull, dry, and loses its shine after giving birth, and they may even start to experience hair loss. Why does this happen? Dr. Chan Sheung Hey Thomas, a dermatologist, explains that postpartum hair loss is a normal phenomenon, and mothers need not worry. With proper rest and body care, the situation will gradually improve and return to its pre-pregnancy state.

Hair Growth Cycle

In the hair growth cycle, about 85% of hair is in the active growth phase, where it grows continuously for about four years before entering a resting phase for four months. The remaining 15% is in the resting phase, during which new hair grows underneath, causing the resting hair to shed. This is the hair we normally lose daily; Dr. Chan notes that it is normal for a person to lose over 100 hairs a day.

Is Postpartum Hair Loss Normal?

Due to the significant changes and stress the body endures during pregnancy and childbirth, the hair growth cycle can be altered, leading to about 70% of hair in the growth phase transitioning to the resting phase. Therefore, postpartum women often experience more hair loss than usual. However, Dr. Chan reassures that women need not excessively worry, as hair loss also indicates new hair growth, and conditions will improve over time, gradually returning to pre-pregnancy levels.

What to Do About Hair Loss?

For postpartum women experiencing hair loss, it typically resolves on its own within two to three months without the need for medication. Dr. Chan advises that if women are concerned about sudden and significant hair loss affecting their appearance, they can use gentle shampoos and carefully comb their hair to allow it to fall out naturally during their recovery period. If hair loss persists for six to nine months without improvement, it may indicate underlying health issues, such as thyroid problems or iron deficiency anemia, and it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly.

Postpartum Hair Care

Many elders often say that postpartum women should avoid washing their hair, but it is actually important for them to keep their hair clean and hygienic. Neglecting cleanliness can damage hair follicles and lead to increased hair loss. Generally, it is acceptable to wash hair normally starting the day after delivery. The water temperature should be appropriate, ideally around 37 degrees Celsius. During washing, gently massaging the scalp is beneficial, and after washing, hair should be lightly dried and then blow-dried.

Dietary Prevention of Hair Loss

Dr. Chan recommends a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and protein sources such as chicken breast and fish to promote hair health. Additionally, maintaining good lifestyle habits, engaging in regular exercise, and ensuring adequate rest can help alleviate stress and reduce skin problems.
